To Boil the Dal:
- 300g Yellow Split Gram (Moong Dal), washed and soaked for 2 hours
- 300g Red Split Lentil (Masoor Dal), washed and soaked for 2 hours
- 1 tsp Turmeric (levelled)
- Water (enough to boil the lentils until tender and then grind to a smooth paste)
Other Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup Oil
- 1 Large Onion (finely chopped)
- 1 1/2 tbsp Ginger & Garlic Paste
- 3 Bullet Green Chillies (finely chopped)
- 1 Large Tomato (finely chopped)
- 1 tsp Turmeric
- 1 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1 tbsp Coriander Powder
- 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
- 1 tbsp Crushed Red Chilli
- 1/2 cup Water
For Tempering:
- 1 cup Ghee (or 1/3 cup)
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 6 Garlic Cloves (julienne cut)
- 1 inch Ginger (julienne cut)
- 4 Bullet Green Chillies (sliced)
- Handful of Fresh Coriander
- 1/2 tsp Paprika Powder
- 1 tsp Garam Masala Powder
1. Boil the Lentils:
- Wash the moong dal and masoor dal, and soak them in water for a few hours. Boil the lentils with 1 tsp of turmeric and enough water until they become tender. Once tender, grind them to a smooth paste.
2. Start the Dal:
- Heat oil in a pan, add finely chopped onions and fry on high flame until the onions become soft.
3. Add Aromatics:
- Stir in the ginger and garlic paste and fry on high flame for 4 minutes.
4. Incorporate Spices and Tomatoes:
- Add finely chopped green chilies, tomato, 1 tsp of turmeric, 1 1/2 tsp of salt, 1 tsp of red chili powder, 1 tbsp of coriander powder, and 1/2 cup of water. Mix well and cook on low-medium heat until the oil separates and the masala is done.
5. Add Dal Mixture:
- Now, add the ground dal mixture and mix well. Add 1 cup of water and adjust salt to taste. Cover and cook for an additional 8 minutes on low flame.
6. Prepare the Tempering:
- In a separate pan, heat ghee, add cumin seeds, julienne-cut garlic, ginger, and sliced green chilies. Fry until they change color on high flame.
7. Final Touch:
- Add fresh coriander and paprika powder to the tempering mixture. Mix well.
8. Garnish with Garam Masala:
- Sprinkle 1 tsp of garam masala powder and mix.
9. Serve Hot:
- Your flavorful Moong Masoor Dal Tadka is ready to be served hot. Enjoy it with rice, roti, paratha, or alongside your favorite meat or chicken curry.
